On his fiftieth birthday, British journalist and self-described “indolent sportsman” Mark Law decides to take up judo on a whim and ends up getting hooked on the sport. Falling Hard is Law’s love letter to judo—the culture, drama, history, and practice. With journalistic zeal, he delves deeply into the sport’s history and lore, and interweaves his own judo experiences with the development of judo in Japan, the life and vision of its founder Jigoro Kano, the export of judo to the West, the emergence of women in the sport, and detailed descriptions of competition on the world championship and Olympic levels. Law’s account is as much for the sports writing fan and armchair enthusiast as for the judo practitioner. With humor and skill, he describes grueling training sessions and matches (including his own), famous Olympic bouts, and legendary rivalries between judo players and national teams, and he speculates on the future of the sport.

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais is best known for pioneering the somatic therapy that bears his name. Less well known is that he was also one of the earliest European practitioners of the martial art of judo and wrote a number of influential texts on the subject. Primary among these is Higher Judo, first published in 1952 and now reprinted with a new foreword that offers useful context and elaborates on Feldenkrais’ comprehensive—and still timely—approach to the martial art and to the body.Judo was a natural choice for Feldenkrais’s fascination with body/mind exploration and how to promote optimal functioning through awareness. In Higher Judo, he presents judo as the art of using all parts of the body to promote general health, and as part of the “basic culture of the body.” He reveals judo’s potential for creating a sense of rhythm of movement and improving mental and physical coordination. Higher Judo covers specific movements and positions—the astride position, the six o’clock approach, falling techniques—in both the text and the clear line drawings. Even more importantly, it shows how such groundwork can help practitioners develop their mental and physical awareness to their full potential.

Judo, or the Way of Gentleness, an ideal form of physical exercise and a reliable system. of self-defense, was specially created from traditional Japanese martial arts. This book by the creator of Kodokan judo is uniquely comprehensive and the most authoritative guide to this martial art ever published.Over a hundred years ago Jigoro Kano mastered swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat. Failing to discover any underlying principle, he set about designing a new martial art to reflect the concept of maximum efficiency in the use of physical and mental energy. Today, the concepts and techniques of judo taught at the Kodokan are the ones originally devised by their creator and collected together in this book. Covering everything from the fundamental techniques to prearranged formal exercises for both men and women, the book offers detailed explanations of how techniques are combined in two types of practice: randori (free practice) and kata (the practice of forms). In addition to a discussion of traditional methods of resuscitation, the book concludes with a useful appendix of information on the founder and the Kodokan International Judo Center, and a glossary of judo terminology. Fully illustrated throughout, Kodokan Judo will help students and instructors everywhere to discover the principles, techniques, and spirit of this popular martial art.

In this essay (6,881 words) I introduce Warrior Zen, explaining that the historical link between Zen and martial arts that informs the work of people from Miyamoto Musashi to Bruce Lee cannot be understood simply as the confluence of martial arts plus meditation. While there was an historical link between Zen and the samurai dating from the Kamakura period and the Mongol invasions of Japan it wasn't until Takuan Soho (author of The Unfettered Mind) linked swordsmanship to ancient Taoist teachings that merged with Indian Buddhism to create Zen Buddhism that the first Zen philosophy of martial arts emerged. This was warmly accepted by such notable people as Miyamoto Musashi who went further with his philosophy of Heiho, or the practice of a Way of Enlightenment, or how a chosen path, whether it be swordsmanship, craftsmanship or the tea ceremony, can bring the practitioner to a state of spiritual awareness. I develop this idea further by examining evidence from neuroscience that demonstrates that indeed, the repetitive execution of an activity can induce a profound Altered State of Consciousness. In this essay then I examine and explain three elements of Warrior Zen: 1) The historical link between the samurai and Zen and how meditation affects us at a neurological level 2) The philosophy of Takuan Soho and how this mirrors ancient Taoist teachings 3) How the pursuit of a martial art as a form of dynamic meditation can produce an Altered State of Consciousness.Vincent Paul Cooper lives in Fukuoka, Japan. He has been training in Shotokan karate for 30 years now. In addition he also practices Jeet Kune Do, along with his new love, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which he has been training in for 4 years. He is the first non-Japanese to train in the battlefield art of Jigen ryu swordsmanship in Kagoshima, the school of the Shimazu samurai clan and a telling influence on the development of Okinawan karate. He is active training several hours a day, seven days a week.He completed a Masters degree at SOAS, University of London, writing on the Japanese Zen arts, a field of study he has continued to research since his graduation. You can visit his website at: www.karatewithvincentcooper.com/Or join him on Facebook at www.facebook.com/vincent.cooper.31

In 1882 Jigoro Kano (1860-1938) founded Kodokan Judo at Eishoji Temple in Tokyo. It was the culmination of a lifelong devotion to the jujutsu of the past, which he reorganized while taking great care to retain its classical traditions. Historically, martial arts were practiced only by the elite in Japan. Kano, a renowned educator as well as a sportsman, is credited with popularizing the martial arts, and in particular, judo, among people in all levels of society. When he was young, Kano studied jujutsu, a martial art practiced in Japan since feudal times, which involved throwing, hitting, kicking, stabbing, slashing, choking, bending and twisting limbs — and defenses against these attacks. After years of studying, he realized that although many different jujutsu techniques were taught, there was no one core value holding them together. Kano identified an all-pervasive principle — to make the most efficient use of mental and physical energy — and combined only those techniques in which this principle was correctly applied into modern judo. "Ju" means gentleness or giving way. "Do" means principle or the way. Judo, therefore is the Way of Gentleness, which implies that first giving way leads to ultimate victory. The Kodokan is literally, "the school for studying the Way." This book is a collection of Kano’s essential teachings, selected and compiled from his wealth of writings and lectures spanning a period of fifty-one years. Today the International Judo Federation has 187 member countries and regions. As an official sport of the Olympic Games, judo has inspired young people of all nationalities, and Kodokan is universally recognized as the Mecca of Judo.
